Learning how to speak English fluently can be challenging especially for people whose country’s main language is totally different such as Portuguese. However, it’s not impossible.
If you’re a Portuguese speaker wanting to improve your English skills, here are some ways to do it.
1. Practice speaking it
In Portuguese-speaking countries such as Brazil, English instruction is mostly focused on grammar. People don’t become fluent in English because they’re not encouraged to actually speak it. Go beyond learning present perfect tenses, grab a buddy, and practice speaking in English as often as you can instead.
2. Focus on pronunciation
Portuguese speakers often have a strong accent when speaking in English, making them hard to understand. Learn to properly pronounce your English words so that you can be understood easily.
3. Watch English shows
You can learn a lot by listening to native English speakers talk. Beyond the grammar, you will learn how they normally converse without sounding like they’re reading from an English textbook.
If these aren’t enough, enroll in an English course from either a brick and mortar language institution or an English class online. The important thing for you to do to improve is just to keep practicing.
