Rhinoplasty surgery is often referred to as a “nose job”. Although you would often hear this more common term, especially when talking about cosmetic surgeries and celebrities, aesthetics is not the only reason why you might decide to have rhinoplasty surgery. Rhinoplasty cost can be 6.8K or more, after all. While many people think that spending that much to make their noses look better, a rhinoplasty may be medically necessary in some cases.
Although what a rhinoplasty does is change the shape of your nose, this simple change can result in many different changes in your face and the way you breathe. Aside from the shape, rhinoplasty can also be done to change the size and angle of your nose, to reshape the tip, to narrow the nostrils, and to straighten the bridge. Here are some non-aesthetic reasons for rhinoplasty surgery.
- To repair an injury. You may be perfectly happy with your nose, but injuries caused by accident or trauma may necessitate a nose job. People who get a nose injury and require a rhinoplasty often have the option of simply recreating the original shape of their nose. There are also some people who take the opportunity to make improvements to their nose since they’ll be getting the surgery anyway.
- To correct breathing problems. Whether caused by a congenital condition, a previous injury, a deviated septum, or a prior rhinoplasty, some breathing problems may be corrected with rhinoplasty surgery. This may involve a more detailed assessment to find the specific cause of the breathing problem and to come up with a plan that will solve it.
- To correct a birth defect. There are many congenital conditions that are associated with specific facial characteristics. Pediatric rhinoplasty is not an uncommon surgery for babies born with facial defects such as cleft nasal deformities. Because rhinoplasty is not recommended for very young patients, pediatric rhinoplasty is usually only done if it is medically necessary.
